2.2 - Moving to Seville, His Youth and Learning - 568/1172

When Muhammad was eight years old, Murcia became smaller than his horizons, and all Andalusia will soon be very small for his dreams. He moved with his family in 568/1172 to Seville, in the southwest of the country, a city not much different from his hometown. But it was a large multi-ethnic and multi-religious city rich in its multiple artistic and urban activities, where philosophers, scientists and intellectuals compete.

This transformation took place after the death of Ibn Mardanish, as we saw in the first chapter, where the resistance against Almohads was ended in the east of Andalusia, and Sultan Abu Yaqoub Yusuf Ibn Abdul-Momin took control of Murcia and Valencia. Abu Muhammad Ali Ibn al-Arabi must have been with them, the sons of Ibn Mardanish went to the capital of Almohad state to announce their loyalty, in accordance with the desire of their deceased father, and took all the leaders and princes with them. There, Abu Muhammad remained close to the Sultan and also held a high position at his court.
