One of the first disciples to accompany Shaykh Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi to Damascus, after Badr al-Habashi’s death, appears to have been Ismail ibn Sawdakin al-Nuri. He had met Ibn al-Arabi in Egypt and lived with him in Aleppo.

Ismail tells us in al-Wasail that in 620 Shaykh Muhyiddin once advised him and warned him against occupying himself with anything other than God. Things may appear to you, he said, and preoccupy you while you imagine that you see only God’s face in them. All this is deception and a gradual drawing into error; one must not become occupied with anything other than God. If God manifests Himself to you in something, receive Him from that aspect and do not stop at the thing itself. [817]

We do not know whether this advice was given in Damascus, Aleppo or perhaps on the road to Damascus. It is quite possible that Ibn Sawdakin travelled with his teacher, who seems to have arrived in Damascus early that year or perhaps late in 619. In any case, at the beginning of the year we find his son Muhammad attending lessons and audition sessions in Shaykh Muhyiddin’s house in Damascus, including a reading of al-Tajalliyat, as we shall see in the next section.
