2.6 - Shaykh Abdullah al-Mawruri, the Pole of Reliance

It seems that Shaykh Ibn al-Arabi begun his internal reconnaissance trips, beyond Seville and Cordoba, to the city of Moror (Moron), a small town to the east between Seville and Ronda. The reason for this travel was that he wanted to master the station of Reliance (Tawakkul), so he searched for its source, until God Almighty disclosed to him the Pole of Trust, and he saw that the (virtues of) trust are revolving around him just like the mill spins around its center. He is Abdullah Ibn al-Ustaz (the son of the teacher) al-Mawruri, who was the pole of trust in his time. When Ibn al-Arabi met him and accompanied him, he told him of what he disclosed, thus he smiled and thanked God [Futuhat: IV.76]

There is no doubt that Shaykh Abdullah was impressed by the Greatest Shaykh and that he knew the elevated state of his knowledge and realization, and perhaps that’s why he came later to visit him in Seville to learn from him the knowledge of God Almighty. This is because he had a brother who died and when he saw in a dream, he asked him: What did Allah do to you? He replied to him: He brought me to Paradise, eating and drinking. At that he said to him: I am not asking you about that! Have you seen your Lord? He replied: the one who may see Him is that who knows him. Therefore, when he woke up he quickly rode his horse and came to Shaykh Muhyiddin in Seville and told him of this vision and asked him to teach him how to know Allah. Thus he stayed with him until he knew Allah as much as the creation could know Him by way of disclosure and witnessing, rather not through any theoretical evidence or proofs [Futuhat: IV.510].
