3.2.13 - Some Quotes of Shaykh Abu Madyan

Although he did not meet him, Shaykh Muhyiddin’s admiration for Shaykh Abu Madyan exceeded all limits that he quoted his words so often in the Meccan Revelations and other books, as if he was living with him. In the following we put examples of some concise statements he quoted:

egin(itemize

“The seeker does not become true seeker until he finds in the Quran all what he seeks.” [Futuhat: III.94].

With regard to the hadith of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: “He will not enter paradise that in whose heart an atom of arrogance” [Kanz: 7771], Shaykh Muhyiddin says: Our Shaykh Abu Madyan, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say: Yes, true, it will be removed from his heart before one enters paradise without him, and arrogance shall remain in the fire as embodied image or it return to those who have it, so each one shall take what belongs to them [Futuhat: III.117].

About servanthood, Shaykh Abu Madyan says: “It is imperative that the form of servanthood be maintained so that one may enjoy the pleasures of deity.” [Futuhat: III.396]

With regard to the knowledge that we have from God, Ibn al-Arabi says in the words of God Almighty in Surah al-Israa: ((... And what you have been of knowledge is but a little)) [Quran: 17.85], that his Shaykh Abu Madyan says when he heard this verse recited: “This little we have been given, it is not what we own but it is deposited with us, and the lot we have not reached; so we are always ignorant.” [Futuhat: I.253]

He also said elsewhere: “Abu Median used to order his companions to show obedience (to those who are in rule), because he considers that all actions originate from God.” [Futuhat: II.222]

He also quoted him commenting about the return of Shaykh after he is connected (wassil), so he returns for giving guidance: “One of the signs of sincerity of the seeker is his escape from creation. Then the sign of the sincerity of his escape from creation is his presence with the Real. Then the sign of his sincerity of his presence with the Real is returning to creation.” [Futuhat: I.251].

Also in his book of Muhadarat al-Abrar, Shaykh Muhyiddin quoted Shaykh Abu Madyan saying: “Whoever knows God from the pocket (with connection to Money), he will be provided with that, but whoever knows Him from the Unseen, he will also be provided accordingly.” [Muhadarat: II.484].

Therefore, we find that Shaykh Muhyiddin has been greatly influenced by Shaykh Abu Madyan, both directly through the spiritual meetings between them, or through his conversations with his disciples who spread throughout Andalusia and Maghreb, such as Shaykh Abdullah al-Mawruri, Shaykh Yusuf al-Kumi, as wen mentioned in sections

ef(al-mawruri and

ef(al-kumi of Chapter II, as well as Shaykh Abu Muhammad Abdullah al-Mahdawi in Tunisia as we will see in section

ef(al-mahdawi further below, in addition to other shaykhs. We also mentioned in section

ef(taiys of Chapter I that there seems to be an ancient bond between Shaykh Abu Madyan and Dawud al-Taiy, who appears to be one of the grandparents of Shaykh Muhyiddin, may Allah be pleased with them all.
